Rick Steves: The Courage of Conviction Podcast: Live At Hales Segment 3 of 3

rick_steves As host, writer and producer of the popular public television series Rick Steves' Europe, host of the public radio show, Travel with Rick Steves and best-selling author of 30 European travel books, Rick Steves has become one of America's most familiar brands. The name Rick Steves has become synonymous with trustworthy, thoughtful, down-to-earth advice. Yet from the beginning Rick Steves has mingled private conviction with his public image, from concerns for the poor and justice to his most recent stands for legalization of marijuana and opposition to the US war in Iraq. Rick seems to be a man who is unafraid to lose business through taking a stand on controversial issues, and in a day of spin, positioning and go-along-to-get-along, this seems unusual. Our subject is The Courage of Conviction and our guest is Rick Steves joined by Dan Voetmann of Destination Marketing.

  1. For Rick- You seem to be concerned and aware of what is going on in the 3rd World countries – are you considering expanding your travels and/or tours in these countries?

  2. How does a mere civilian take a stand and make a difference? Or is this just the province of those who have "arrived" economically?

  3. You make a very good point about shareholder responsibilities for the public companies compared with private companies. What advice do you have for managers at public companies regarding our social responsibilities and stewardship?

  4. There are people in this country who have stood up for their convictions and suffered significant consequences. For example, scientists and the FDA or journalists pursuing an investigation. How firmly would Rick hold to his convictions if he really believed he would lose everything?

  5. When we traveled in Spain a year ago, we encountered obvious hostility because we were Americans. Since we agree that we shouldn't have invaded Iraq, how can a traveler diffuse this hostility?

  6. Why do Christians have a "rancid reputation?" Because there is so much hypocracy: Jesus threw the money changers out of the temple – the money changers now occupy all the temples/churches….
