I don’t have my Lewis books while I’m here in Africa, but I seem to recall more than just a passing reference to the possibility of purgatory in his writings. Great Divorce is basically a model of that. I seem to recall his mentioning it as a possibility in both Problem of Suffering, Mere Christianity, and one of the essays in God in the Dock. What I mean is, I think he was flirting with the idea – as a possibility – for many years, long before Malcolm.

I think this he did “flirt” with purgatory earlier and I think it may derive from Lewis Platonism and “logic” more than any biblical source. BTW: Where are you in Africa and for how long?
